Thermal Expansion & Offset Calculator

Estimate pipe thermal movement, then calculate the minimum flexible-hose live length needed to accommodate that movement as a lateral offset.

Preliminary design tool: Thermal expansion coefficients are average values. The bend radius must be validated for the exact hose series and motion condition. Do not use this output as a final fabrication dimension without application review.

Thermal movement: ΔL = L × ΔT × α. Offset live length: Lh = √(6YR + Y²), where Y is the total lateral movement basis used for the hose geometry.

Pipe Thermal Expansion & Flexible Hose Offset

Thermal movement is driven by material expansion coefficient, installed temperature, operating temperature, and developed pipe length. This tool first estimates axial pipe growth, then uses that movement as a lateral-offset basis for a flexible hose when a validated hose bend radius is supplied.

Use the result as a preliminary movement basis

The calculated pipe growth does not by itself select an expansion joint, V-loop, compensator, or flexible hose. Final system design must consider anchors, guides, branch connections, equipment nozzles, pressure thrust, available space, cycle requirements, and the movement capability of the selected product.

When to continue into system review

  • Movement is being absorbed by a flexible metal hose or pump connector.
  • An expansion joint or compensator must be sized for axial movement.
  • Pipe guides and anchors are required to control the expansion path.
  • The installation includes repeated thermal cycles or seismic movement.
