Industrial Piping Engineering Workflow

Use this workflow to move from operating conditions and piping geometry into a technically complete product selection or RFQ. Flexible metal hose, expansion joints, compensators, seismic loops, guides, anchors, and supports should be selected from the actual service conditions—not from nominal size or product category alone.

1. Define the Service Conditions

  • Pipe or hose nominal size, schedule, and material.
  • Normal, design, and upset pressure and temperature.
  • Process media, corrosion, cleaning, and compatibility requirements.
  • Installed geometry, available envelope, and equipment connections.
  • Movement type: vibration, axial, lateral, angular, seismic, or installation flexibility.
  • Cycle frequency, expected service cycles, transients, and startup/shutdown conditions.

2. Establish the Engineering Inputs

3. Choose the Product Family

4. Verify Pressure, Movement & Installation

The selected product must be checked as a complete assembly. For metal hose, confirm hose series, braid count, fitting materials, welds, pressure, temperature, media, bend radius, live length, cycling, and installation geometry. For expansion systems, coordinate the expansion device with anchors, guides, supports, pressure thrust, spring force, and equipment loads.

Use Metal Hose Working Pressure & Temperature Selection, Pipe Guide Layout Review, and Advanced Piping System Review where applicable.

5. Prepare Specifications & Documentation

Use the Metal Hose Assembly Specification Guide and Division 23 Flexible Piping Specification Resource to define materials, dimensions, operating conditions, testing, tagging, MTRs, submittals, and project-specific documentation before production release.

6. Submit a Complete RFQ

Include product type, size, overall length, end connections, materials, pressure, temperature, media, movement, cycle requirements, quantity, documentation requirements, required ship date, and drawings. For piping systems, identify anchors, guides, supports, equipment connections, and the intended movement path.
