HVAC Flexible Connector Engineering Guide
HVAC flexible connectors protect mechanical equipment and piping systems from vibration, thermal movement, equipment movement, and minor installation offsets. Proper selection depends on pressure, temperature, connection type, media, movement requirement, and support geometry.
Common HVAC Applications
- Chilled water pump connectors
- Heating water pump connectors
- Boiler connections
- Cooling tower piping
- Fan coil and air handler piping
- Mechanical room vibration isolation
Connector Types
- Metal hose connectors: used for pressure-rated flexibility, thermal movement, and high-temperature systems.
- Rubber expansion joints: used for vibration isolation and moderate movement in water service.
- Seismic V-loops: used where structural displacement must be absorbed.
- Pipe compensators: used for axial thermal movement in guided piping runs.
Selection Inputs
- Nominal pipe size
- Connection type
- Operating pressure
- Operating temperature
- Media
- Required movement
- Installed face-to-face length
Design Notes
Flexible connectors should not be used to force alignment or absorb uncontrolled pipe movement. Anchors, guides, supports, and expansion compensation devices must be coordinated as part of the complete mechanical system.
